Every AI app says it's the best. The truth is that no tool is better than the other. They're just good at different things. This page shows you what each of the big five is good for, what you get free, when it's worth paying, and which of my free guides to open next.
The plan
- 1Read the short answer and the side-by-side table.
- 2Pick one tool based on what you want help with and the apps you already use.
- 3Use the free plan for a week on real tasks.
- 4Open that tool's complete guide and set it up properly.
- 5Pay only when you keep hitting a limit on something you use every day.
Before you start
Your goal
One thing you want AI to help with this week, like an email, a trip or a work task.
Your apps
Notice what you already live in: Google, Microsoft, Apple, X or WhatsApp.
Your budget
Free is a great place to start. You can always upgrade later.
Start Here: The Short Answer
If you're only going to try one, start with ChatGPT. It's the best all-rounder and the easiest place to learn. If you write a lot or work with long documents, add Claude. And if you can pay for two tools, those are the two I'd pay for.
The other three are great at specific things. Gemini if your life is already in Google. Grok if you want to know what people are saying on X right now. Muse if you want an AI that goes off and does tasks for you.
| Tool | Best for | The free plan gets you |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Everyday questions, brainstorming, images and finished files | Everyday chat on GPT-6 (a lighter version) and limited Work on the desktop app |
| Claude | Writing, long documents and working through files | The Sonnet and Haiku models, up to 5 projects, web search and file creation |
| Gemini | Anything already in Gmail, Docs and Drive | The Flash-Lite model, Deep Research and image creation |
| Grok | What's happening on X right now | A limited amount of Grok |
| Muse | Handing off real tasks like research, trips and purchases | A free plan to try it, in the US to start |
Copy This First: Let AI Help You Pick
Still not sure? Paste this into any AI app.
I'm trying to decide which AI assistant to use: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Muse. Ask me up to five quick questions first, one at a time: what I want help with most, which apps I already use every day (Google, Microsoft, Apple, X or WhatsApp), what country I live in, my monthly budget, and how comfortable I am with tech. Then recommend one tool to start with and one backup. Explain why in simple words, and tell me whether the free plan is enough for me or which paid plan would actually be worth it. If you can search the web, check current plans and features first, and tell me if anything depends on my country. Don't just recommend yourself.
ChatGPT: The All-Rounder
I use ChatGPT to brainstorm, work through ideas and make images. It also has Work, which takes a bigger task and hands you back a finished document, spreadsheet or slides.
When to pay: Plus is the plan most people need. It adds Work on every device, more scheduled tasks and Sites, with no ads. Go is a cheaper step up with higher limits, but it can still show ads. Pro is for heavy daily users.

Claude: The Writer and Thinker
Everything I write goes through Claude. It's really good with long documents, careful writing and projects that span lots of files.
When to pay: Pro adds the top model (Opus), Claude Code, Research, Claude in Chrome and plugins. Max is for people who hit their limits every day.

Gemini: Best If You Live in Google
I use Gemini when the work is already in Google. It saves you moving things between Gmail, Docs and Drive.
When to pay: Google AI Plus is a cheap step up with more storage and Gemini in Gmail. Google AI Pro gets you the top model (Argon), Tasks and a lot more storage. If you're a student in the US, you can get a year of AI Pro free if you redeem it by December 31, 2026.

Grok: What's Happening on X
I open Grok when I want to see what people are talking about on X right now. It can also help with research, writing, images and video.
When to pay: Grok now comes with The X Subscription, which bundles Grok with X Premium. Grok Bot, its agent app that works on its own cloud computer, needs Premium or higher.

Muse: The AI That Does Things
Muse is Meta's personal agent. You give it a job, like researching a purchase, planning a trip or listing something for sale, and it works on it in its own cloud computer. It asks you before sensitive actions like buying something.
When to pay: Muse has a free plan, plus Power and Maximum plans if you use it a lot.

What It Actually Costs
Most of the main paid plans cost about $20 a month (as of October 2026), including ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Google AI Pro and Muse Power.
Start free. Pay when you keep hitting the limit on something you use every day. And if a paid tool isn't saving you more than it costs, you're probably not using it enough yet.
