Companies settle class action lawsuits all the time, and the money goes to anyone who qualifies and files a claim. Most people never claim because they never hear about it. This guide uses ChatGPT to go through your email, match every company you've done business with to the settlements paying out right now, tell you what you qualify for, and fill out the claim forms for you.
How Settlements Work
The plan · 5 steps
- 1Connect Gmail to ChatGPT.
- 2Match your companies to open settlements.
- 3Find out what you qualify for, how much and the deadline.
- 4Switch to Work and let ChatGPT fill out the claims.
- 5Turn on a weekly check for new ones.
Before you start
Your account
ChatGPT on a paid plan (Plus or higher) for Work and its browser. Gmail works best, but there's a version without email below.
Your materials
20 minutes, and the email address or PayPal/Venmo you want payouts sent to.
Your first goal
A list of settlements you qualify for, with deadlines, and your first claim filed.
When a company settles a class action lawsuit, it agrees to pay a pot of money to everyone in the "class": usually people who bought a product, had an account, or had their data exposed in a breach during certain dates. To get your share, you file a claim on the official settlement website before the deadline.
What to know before you start
- Most claims take a few minutes. Many only ask for your name, address and email. Some ask for proof of purchase, like a receipt or order number, which is often already in your email.
- Filing is free. A real settlement never charges you to file a claim.
- Only claim what you qualify for. Claim forms usually ask you to confirm your answers are true under penalty of perjury. Don't claim for something you didn't buy or use.
- Payouts take time. Money usually goes out months after the deadline, once the court gives final approval. How much you get depends on how many people claim.
Heads up: Nobody can promise you a certain amount. ChatGPT finds the settlements and helps you file, but the court and the settlement administrator decide who gets paid and how much.
Connect Gmail and Find Your Matches
Connect Gmail
- Open Settings. Click your name in the bottom left, then Settings.
- Open Plugins. Under Integrations, click Plugins, then Browse directory.
- Add Gmail. Find Gmail, click + and sign in with your Google account.
Then open a new chat and send this:
Go through my email and find every company I've bought from or had an account with, then match them to every open class action settlement.
ChatGPT goes through years of your receipts and accounts and lines them up against settlements that are paying out right now.
Maverick's tip
Use more than one email address? Connect the one you use for shopping and online accounts. That's where the receipts are.
Find Out What You Qualify For
Stay in the same chat and send this:
Which of these do I actually qualify for, how much could I get from each one, and when's the deadline?
Make it a list you can act on
Turn this into a table sorted by deadline: the settlement name, the official claim website, what I need to qualify, whether I need proof of purchase, the estimated payout, and the deadline. Then show me the receipt or email from my inbox that proves each one. Leave out anything where I'm not sure I qualify.
Maverick's tip
Start with the closest deadlines. A settlement that closes next week is worth more to you today than a bigger one that closes next year.
The Trick, Let ChatGPT File the Claims
At the top of ChatGPT, switch from Chat to Work. Then send this:
Go file the claim for every single one I qualify for. Only use the official settlement website for each one. Fill in my name, address, email and any proof of purchase from my inbox, and stop before you submit each claim so I can check it.
On chatgpt.com, Work opens its own browser when it needs one and fills out the claim forms while you watch. When it asks to use a website, check it's the official settlement site before you approve.
Before you hit submit
- Check every answer. Make sure each claim matches what you actually bought and when.
- Pick how you get paid. Many forms let you choose PayPal, Venmo, a virtual card or a check. You enter that yourself.
- Never share your Social Security number or bank login. Ordinary consumer settlements don't need them.
- Save the confirmation. Ask ChatGPT to list every claim ID so you can check the status later.
Heads up: You stay in charge. Read each form and submit it yourself, because you're the one confirming your answers are true.
Bonus: Get Told the Second You Qualify
New settlements open every week. Send this in the same chat:
Check for new settlements every week and tell me the second I qualify for one.
ChatGPT sets it up as a weekly check and lets you know when a new one matches your email.
Settlements are one pot of money. My guide to the money the government owes you covers unclaimed property, old 401(k)s and forgotten tax refunds.
No Gmail? Use This Instead
You can do the same thing without connecting your email. List what you remember, or upload a few bank or credit card statements first.
Here are companies I've bought from or had accounts with in the last few years: [LIST THEM, E.G. AMAZON, YOUR PHONE CARRIER, STREAMING SERVICES, AIRLINES, STORES, ANY COMPANY THAT HAD A DATA BREACH]. Match them to every open class action settlement, tell me which ones I likely qualify for, how much each could pay, the deadline, and the official claim website.
Spot a Fake Settlement
Scammers copy settlement emails. Ask ChatGPT to check any notice before you click:
I got this settlement notice: [PASTE THE EMAIL OR LINK]. Is this a real class action settlement? Find the case name, the court and the official settlement administrator's website, and tell me if anything about this looks like a scam.
| Real settlement | Scam |
|---|---|
| Filing a claim is free | Asks for a fee to "release" your money |
| Has a case name, a court and an official claim site | Vague, with no case name or court |
| Asks for name, address, email and sometimes proof of purchase | Asks for your Social Security number or bank login |
| Has a clear deadline set by the court | Pressures you to act within hours |
Common Mistakes and Quick Fixes
| If this happens | Try this |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT can't see your email | Connect Gmail under Settings > Plugins > Browse directory, then ask again in a new chat. |
| You don't see Work at the top | Work needs a paid plan. Use Chat to find the settlements and file the claims yourself from the links. |
| It lists settlements that already closed | Ask it to show only settlements with deadlines after today. |
| You're not sure you qualify | Skip it. Only claim what you actually bought or used. |
| A claim needs proof you don't have | Ask ChatGPT to search your inbox for the order. Many settlements still pay a smaller amount without proof. |
| The claim site asks for your Social Security number | Stop and ask ChatGPT to check the notice with the scam prompt. Ordinary consumer settlements don't need it. |
| You filed and nothing happened | Normal. Payouts usually come months later, after final approval. Keep your claim IDs. |
