ChatGPT Finances is a personal finance feature built directly into ChatGPT. You connect your bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts, and ChatGPT can see your transactions, balances, and spending patterns. Then you ask it questions in plain English and get answers based on your actual financial data.
It launched on May 15, 2026, first for Pro subscribers, then Plus in late June. Since October 2, it's on every personal plan in the US, including Free and Go. OpenAI also bought Hiro, an AI personal finance startup, in April 2026 and brought its team in. The connections are powered by Plaid, the same financial data network behind Venmo, Robinhood, and thousands of other finance apps. Plaid connects to over 12,000 financial institutions including Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, Schwab, Fidelity, and American Express.
Heads up: Finances is for personal ChatGPT plans in the US: Free, Go, Plus and Pro. It's not available on Business, Enterprise or Edu.
What It Can and Cannot Do
ChatGPT can see your balances, transactions, investments, and recurring charges. It cannot make transactions, move money, pay bills, make trades, or change anything in your accounts. Access is strictly read-only. It also cannot see your full account numbers.
Key features:
- Spending dashboard: visual breakdown of where your money goes by category
- Subscription tracker: lists every recurring charge with amounts and dates
- Bill tracker: shows upcoming payments and due dates
- Net worth tracker: tracks your total net worth over time
- Portfolio view: investment performance and allocation breakdown
- Credit score: your Experian credit score and report (Plus and Pro)
- Savings planner: builds plans based on your actual income and spending
- Goal planning: multi-year plans for houses, retirement, education
How to Set It Up
Step 1: Open Finances
Open ChatGPT and find Finances in the left sidebar (on some versions it sits under Explore or More). You can also go straight to chatgpt.com/finances, or type @Finances, connect my accounts in any chat.
Quick access:
Sidebar > Finances > Get started > Connect with Plaid Or go to: chatgpt.com/finances
Step 2: Connect Your Accounts
Click Get started, then Connect with Plaid. ChatGPT uses Plaid to handle the connection. You will search for your bank, sign in with your banking credentials, and authorize read-only access. Your login details go directly to Plaid. OpenAI never sees them.
You can connect multiple accounts: checking, savings, credit cards, investment accounts, and loans. The more you connect, the more complete the picture.
Tip: Connect everything. If you only connect one credit card, ChatGPT will think that is your entire financial life.
Step 3: Wait for Sync
After connecting, ChatGPT pulls in your transaction history and categorizes everything. This usually takes a few minutes on the first sync. Once it is done, you will see dashboard widgets on your Finances page showing spending by category, subscriptions, bills, and account balances.
Step 4: Start Asking Questions
You can ask questions from the Finances page or from any regular ChatGPT conversation. Type @Finances or /finances in your message to pull in financial data, or just ask a money-related question and ChatGPT will use your connected data automatically.
Your first question:
@Finances, give me a full breakdown of everywhere I've spent money this month. Organize it by category and tell me what's changed compared to last month.
Your credit score, too. On Plus and Pro you can also connect your Experian credit score from the Finances page. It's a separate connection, a soft inquiry that doesn't hurt your score, and it updates monthly. Type your details into Experian's form, never into the chat.
Tip: Connecting Finances can add a Weekly finances update task on its own. Keep it, or go to Scheduled to pause or delete it.
Your First Money Moves
Once your accounts are connected, the subscription audit is the fastest win. Most people find at least $50 to $200 in forgotten or overlapping subscriptions.
Start here:
@Finances, look at all of my subscriptions and recurring charges, and build me a full dashboard so I can see everything I'm paying for.
Then follow up with:
Now help me choose which ones to cancel, and tell me how much I'll save every single year.
