Most people open ChatGPT or Claude, type a question, and wonder why the answer sounds like it was written by a corporate intern. The AI knows nothing about your job, your audience, your goals, or how you like things written. So it defaults to safe, bland, generic output.
A master prompt fixes that permanently. It is one file that contains everything about you. Your job, your goals, your writing style, how you talk, your industry, your preferences, your communication habits. You upload it once into any AI and suddenly every response starts at a much higher level.
Why context wins: Research consistently shows that context matters more than the model, the prompting technique, or the tool. A mid prompt with great context will outperform a perfect prompt with zero context every single time.
The best part is portability. You build the master prompt once and drop it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, or whatever you use next. Same file, same results, across every tool. Want to take that further? My AI file system guide turns it into a whole context folder that works across multiple AI tools.
How to Build Yours
You are going to paste a prompt into ChatGPT or Claude that turns the AI into an interviewer. It asks you 100 questions across 10 rounds covering your work, your life, your family, your goals, and how you write and talk. Then it takes all your answers and generates a complete master prompt document organized into clean sections.
Step 1: Paste the Builder Prompt
Copy this prompt into a new ChatGPT or Claude conversation. It will walk you through the entire process step by step.
Step 2: Turn on Voice Mode
This is the pro tip most people skip. Instead of typing out answers to 100 questions, just talk. Turn on voice mode in ChatGPT and answer out loud. It is faster, more natural, and you will give more honest, detailed answers than you would typing.
- ChatGPT (mobile, web or desktop): tap the voice button (the sound-wave icon) in the message bar.
- Claude: tap the sound-wave icon (voice mode is in beta on every plan).
- Alternative: use WisprFlow or another AI dictation tool so you can talk on any platform.
Step 3: Context Dump Everything
The AI will ask you 10 rounds of 10 questions each. Do not give short answers. Ramble, go on tangents, tell stories, over-explain everything. The more raw context you give, the better your master prompt will be.
Expect this to take 2 to 4 hours. Yes, hours. This is the most important file you will ever create for AI. The people who rush through it in 30 minutes get a generic master prompt. The people who spend real time talking and dumping context get something that actually transforms their AI experience.
Step 4: Get Your Master Prompt PDF
After all 10 rounds, the AI will ask any final clarifying questions, then generate your complete master prompt as a PDF. Download it. This is the file you will upload into every AI tool you use from now on.
What Goes Inside
Your master prompt should be organized into clear sections so the AI can quickly find the right context. The main sections to include are:
- Work and Career: your role, responsibilities, industry, company size, tools you use, how your team works, what your boss or stakeholders care about, current projects, and what success looks like.
- Goals and Priorities: short-term and long-term goals, what you are optimizing for, what you are willing to sacrifice, and what you are not.
- Voice and Writing Style: how you sound when you write or speak, words you use, words you avoid, sentence length, humor, formality level, and pet peeves. To lock your writing voice in even tighter, add the ChatGPT Humanizer rules.
- Life and Family: the personal context that shapes your decisions, schedule, and communication.
- Preferences and Defaults: how you like information delivered, response length, formatting, whether you want examples, and how you make decisions.
Do not include sensitive information like passwords, bank account numbers, social security numbers, or private medical details. Your master prompt should be detailed about who you are, not a security risk.
Three Versions of the Prompt
The builder prompt above creates a personal master prompt, but the concept works for different contexts.
Personal version: focuses on your life, goals, voice, and preferences so any AI sounds like you.
Business version: focuses on your company, customers, products, positioning, and operations. Use this when you have a separate AI workspace for business tasks.
Corporate version: focuses on a specific role at your company. This is the one that can deliver serious ROI across an entire organization because every person in the same role gets consistent, context-aware output.
Where to Store It
Once you have built your master prompt, make it persistent so you do not have to upload it every time.
- ChatGPT: upload the PDF into a Project (here's how Projects work) or attach it at the start of important conversations. To have it in every chat, paste the key parts into Settings > Personalization > Custom instructions (up to 5,000 characters). Custom GPTs used to be the way to bake it in, but they retire on December 11, 2026, and new ones can't be created on Free, Go, Plus or Pro anymore.
- Claude: add it to a Project, or paste the key parts into Settings > General > Instructions for Claude so it applies to every chat.
- Gemini: open Customize in the left menu and add a skill with your master prompt as its instructions (Skills replaced Gems), then type / and its name in any chat. Or upload the PDF at the start of a chat.
- Perplexity: upload the PDF at the start of a chat.
Save the PDF somewhere easy to access, like your desktop or a cloud folder. When you switch AI tools or try a new one, just upload it. Instant context, zero rework.
What Changes Once You Use It
These are not theoretical use cases. These are things that immediately get better once your master prompt is active.
Email and messaging: ask the AI to draft a message to a specific person and it will match your tone and relationship with that person instead of sounding like a template.
Content creation: ask for a LinkedIn post or article and it will sound like you wrote it, not like AI.
Decision making: ask the AI to walk you through a choice and it will factor in your priorities, risk tolerance, and current situation the way you would.
Research and summaries: the AI will surface what matters to you and skip what does not, because it knows what you care about.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing through the questions. Quick, vague answers produce a generic master prompt. Block the time and context dump.
- Holding back. The AI cannot use what you do not share. Over-explain everything.
- Making it too short. A one-paragraph master prompt is not enough detail to change anything.
- Including sensitive data. Keep passwords, account numbers, and private medical details out of it.
- Building it once and never updating it. Your life and work change. Set a reminder to refresh your master prompt every few months.
Advanced Setups
Power users often create multiple master prompts for different contexts. You might have one for personal life, one for business, one for creative work, and one for a specific team role.
You can also add an auto-update prompt so the AI keeps improving your master prompt over time:
From now on, whenever I mention something new about my life, job, goals, or preferences in our conversations, add it to your memory and flag it for the next master prompt update.
