Happy Wednesday,
Today I've got five ChatGPT modes most people have no idea exist, OpenAI is handing every college student in America four months of ChatGPT Plus for free (yes, actually free), Meta launched its own AI agent and Zuckerberg just fired back at the whole slow-down thing, and ChatGPT can now edit your videos for you, captions and all.
Let's get into it.

5 Secret ChatGPT Modes
ChatGPT has modes built into it that completely change how it behaves, and almost nobody uses them because they're tucked behind menus you've never clicked. These are the five I actually use every week, and every one of them works on the free plan.
| Mode |
Where it is |
What it does |
| Study mode |
Hit the plus button on the left of the chat bar, choose Study |
Stops handing you answers and teaches you instead. Quizzes you one step at a time until you actually get it |
| Incognito mode |
Click the dotted speech bubble in the top right of any chat |
Starts a temporary chat. Nothing gets saved, no memory, no history, completely off the record |
| Genius mode |
The thinking slider in the message box, all the way up to Pro |
The difference between a quick guess and an answer it actually thinks about. Deepest levels need Plus or Pro |
| Health mode |
Left sidebar, More, then Health |
Connects your Apple Health so it can see your real sleep, steps and heart rate and build plans around your actual body |
| Build your own mode |
Any new chat, prompt down below |
Build a mode from scratch. Type in what you want it to do for you and the trigger word that turns it on, and it switches into that mode whenever you want |
That last one is the one people go crazy for, because you can make as many as you want. Here's the one I built first. Paste it into a new chat and hit enter.
|
Whenever I type BRUTAL MODE: critique the work directly. Lead with the biggest flaw. No compliments, no reassurance, no closing encouragement. Name what I'm avoiding. Respectful about me, blunt about the work. Save this to memory.
|
From then on you just type BRUTAL MODE before anything you want torn apart. I've got ten of these saved now, and the full list is in the guide.

🎓 CLAIM THIS NOW
ChatGPT Is Now Free for Students
Here's a super cool one. OpenAI is giving every college student in the US their $20 a month Plus plan for free, four months of it, and you only have until Halloween to claim it. If you're a student, or you know one, this is about $80 sitting on the table.
It's not a watered-down version either. You get the full Plus plan, and that includes ChatGPT Work, the agent that actually goes and does tasks for you instead of just answering questions. Full-time, part-time, undergrad, grad school, all of it counts as long as you're enrolled at a US college. Claiming it takes about two minutes.
Step 1: Go to the student offer page and sign in with the ChatGPT account you actually use.
If you're already paying for Plus through the ChatGPT website, you can still claim it and the four free months kick in. The one catch is if you pay through the App Store or Google Play, that doesn't qualify, so switch your billing first.
Step 2: Verify you're a student. It runs through SheerID, and for most schools that's just logging in with your school account. Some will ask for a class schedule or an enrollment letter instead.
Step 3: Add a card and activate. You won't be charged for the four months, but it does roll into the normal $20 a month after that, so set a reminder to cancel before it renews if you don't want to keep it.
Once you're in, drop your lecture recording or slides in and ask for a full study guide. Have it build your class presentation. Open voice mode before an exam and tell it to grill you like a professor would, out loud, until you stop getting things wrong. That last one is the one I'd have killed for in college.
The offer disappears on October 31st. If you're not a student, forward this to someone who is, it's the easiest $80 you'll ever hand somebody.

🚨 THIS IS BIG
Meta Just Launched Muse
On Sunday I told you the two men at the front of the AI race had both said out loud that it needs to slow down. Well, this morning Mark Zuckerberg posted his answer, and it was basically: not us. His line was that "every lab has the responsibility and incentive to move at the pace required to train its models safely," and that Meta held back its own agent for months to get it right rather than asking everyone else to pump the brakes. Which is when I realized I never told you about that agent. It's called Muse, it launched last week, and it's free.
Muse is Meta's personal AI agent. Not a chatbot, an agent, meaning you tell it what you want done and it goes and does it. It sends the emails, books the flight, gets the restaurant table, fills in the form and pays for the thing. The example that got me was saving a recipe on Instagram and having Muse turn it into a grocery order. It runs on Meta's own Muse Spark model, and it lives in the Muse app, at muse.ai, and inside WhatsApp, so most of the planet already has it in their pocket.
|
Muse |
| Cost |
Free up to 100 million tokens a week, which is a lot. $20 a month and $100 a month above that |
| Where |
iPhone, Android, muse.ai, WhatsApp. US only for now, 18 and up. Meta's glasses are next |
| How it works |
Runs on its own computer in the cloud, not on your phone. A system called Sentinel watches everything that leaves it and asks you before anything new goes out |
| What it can't see |
Your passwords. Payments go through single-use card numbers, and Meta says it's walled off from the ad business entirely |
My take: I think it's a great tool, and I'm glad Meta is doing their thing here, because a free agent inside WhatsApp puts this in front of more normal people than anything OpenAI has done. I'm testing it out this week and I'll tell you what I actually think once I've let it loose on my inbox.
But here's the bigger picture. I know it feels like everyone is launching something similar to this right now. Muse, ChatGPT Work, Grok Bot, every one of these companies has put out almost the same thing in the last month: an agent that runs on its own computer, logs into your stuff and does tasks while you're asleep. That tells you exactly where this is all heading. The chatbot era is over and the agent era is here, and the question is no longer who has the smartest model, it's who consumers actually flock to and who masters it first. And this is where I think Meta's moat might be. Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp already know more about you than any chatbot ever will. How you browse, what you save, who you talk to, what you buy, what you've been looking at for the last ten years. An agent that starts with all of that already loaded is a very different thing from one you have to teach from zero. My prediction hasn't changed since I wrote about it in August: the day Apple launches this built into your iPhone, it's game over for everyone else.

ChatGPT Can Now Edit Your Videos
You upload any video, and ChatGPT adds the captions, cuts out the dead space and drops full on-screen animations over the key moments, then hands it back ready to post. This runs through Codex, the coding side of ChatGPT, using a free plugin called Remotion that lets it edit video with code. You don't need to understand any of that. Here's the setup in 30 seconds.
Step 1: Open the ChatGPT desktop app (it has to be the desktop app, the browser version can't see your files), click the switcher in the top left and choose Codex.
Step 2: Click Plugins, search for Remotion, and hit Install.
Step 3: Drag any video into the Codex window and paste this in.
|
@remotion Edit this video for Instagram Reels. Add word-by-word captions, three or four words on screen at a time. Cut every silence longer than 0.6 seconds and remove filler words. Find the five strongest moments and add a pop-in headline on each. Show me the transcript and the headlines before you render.
|
That last line makes it show you the cuts and the on-screen text first, so you can fix a name it misheard before it spends ten minutes rendering. The first run has a one-time setup that can take 20 to 45 minutes while it installs what it needs. After that every edit is about ten minutes, and you can batch a whole folder of clips.
Two things it can't do: it won't make new footage or B-roll, and nobody watches the final cut but you, so watch it before you post. For talking-head clips and podcast cuts, this is the one.
